Interview with an Author – Elicia Hyder

I recently won the book The Soul Summoner.  While I wait for the book to arrive, I decided I want to learn more about the author behind the book.  And I want to share this with all of you, of course…

Elicia Hyder

Which writers inspire you?

Different writers inspire me for different reasons.  JK Rowling is the first to come to mind because, not only is she an excellent storyteller and visionary, she’s just an amazing person.  I also have major respect for a lot of Indie authors who are really making their own dreams come true.  Writers like Amanda Hocking, Hugh Howey, and Andy Weir are easy to look to for inspiration.  So are those who are rocking self-publishing like Mark Dawson and Joanna Penn.

Do you work to an outline or plot, or do you prefer just to see where an idea takes you?

I prefer to see where an idea takes me, but that’s not very practical… particularly when writing a series like I am.  Lots of planning, plotting, and story weaving is involved.

What is the easiest/hardest thing about writing?

The easiest part of writing for me is coming up with ideas.  The hardest thing is finding the time to write them all!

Do you think the cover plays an important part in the buying process of books?

The cover is the most important part of the buying process.  A book can be the best thing ever written and if the cover stinks, no-one will ever open it to read it.

Any tips on what to do and what not to do when writing?

Don’t over-edit or over-write the first draft.  Just get the book out and onto paper… or a screen (in our digital age).  And don’t neglect to write multiple drafts.  Great books don’t just happen. They are the product of a lot of hard work.

What are you working on at this moment?

I’m currently working on the next book in The Soul Summoner series and trying to get it out for publication.  I’m also writing a new book about roller derby that I’m pretty excited about.

Right now Elicia is running a giveaway where readers can sign up to get The Soul Summoner for free.

Bit more about the author:

When I’m not writing, I can be found sipping craft beer in my blow-up swimming pool or beating my children… at Harry Potter trivia.  I am married to a superhero and have two dogs with severe separation anxiety.  I suck at CAPTCHA puzzles and firmly believe that heaven will have heavy metal music!

Interview with an Author – Michelle Madow

Hi, everyone.  Eagerly anticipating the final book in the Elementals series, I decided to do my very first author interview with:

Michelle Madow

Which writers inspire you?

Rick Riordan, Stephanie Meyer, and JK Rowling.

Do you work to an outline or plot, or do you prefer just to see where an idea takes you?

I create detailed outlines for my books!  Having an outline stops me from getting writer’s block because I can work through plot issues when my book is still in the outline phase.  Then, when it comes time to draft, all I need to focus on is the actual writing!

What is the easiest/hardest thing about writing?

The hardest thing is getting started with drafting each day!  It’s hard to sit down and force myself to start, although it’s so rewarding once I’ve completed my words for the day.  The easiest thing is … well, there’s truly nothing ‘easy’ about the business.  But I do enjoy interacting with readers online and through email! ☺

Do you think the cover plays an important part in the buying process of books?

YES!  Covers are so important.  If an author invests in a high-quality cover, it gives the impression that what’s INSIDE the book will be high-quality as well. ☺

Any tips on what to do and what not to do when writing?

Everyone has to find a unique process that works for them!  For me, outlining helps me tremendously.  If I try writing without an outline, it’s disastrous.  But it’s not the same way for everyone!  Some authors work better without an outline.  But one thing that I think every writer should make sure they do is to set a goal of how many words they want to write each day, and then sit down and REACH that goal each day.

What are you working on at this moment?

I’m editing a standalone YA romantic thriller of mine called Collide that’s releasing in February! ☺
